What is Cleocin?
Cleocin belongs to lincomycin synthetic antibiotics group and is an effective treatment for serious bacterial infections. It prevents the bacteria from growing by blocking its ribosomes and hindering the bacteria’s ability to make proteins. It is effective in battling several kinds of bacteria such as Streptococcus pneumonia, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, and Propionibacterium acnes. It was FDA approved in February 1970.

What are the indications for using Cleocin?
Cleocin can be prescribed to those who suffer from infections caused by anaerobic bacteria, such as infections of the skin, respiratory tract, peritonitis, soft tissue, and dental infections. Cleocin is often prescribed instead of penicillin to patients who are allergic to it. It is also used for protozoal infections, such as malaria, and for bone and joint infections, especially if these are caused by the Staphylococcus aureus. Cleocin is sometimes used to treat acne.

What is the dosage for Cleocin?
Cleocin is usually administered approximately every 6 hours. The exact dosage is determined by evaluating patient’s condition and its severity. The usual starting dosage for most infections is 150-300mg. The dosage for children is 8-16mg/kg/day to be split into three or four doses. For more severe conditions the appropriate dosage is higher – 300-450mg. Children should take 16-20mg/kg/day, also in 3 or 4 doses. The medication should be washed down with water. Also, do not lie down in the 10 minutes following the administration of Cleocin.

What are the contraindications for using Cleocin?
In order to avoid a possible allergic reaction, Cleocin shouldn’t be taken by people with an allergy to it or to its ingredients. This drug is also contraindicated to patients with some intestinal problems, such as ulcerative colitis, Crohn disease, and antibiotic-associated colitis. Also, it should not be taken by pregnant women or people suffering from meningitis, liver problems, or bowel problems.

What are the adverse effects of Cleocin?
An allergic reaction to Cleocin can manifest as the swelling of the tongue, throat or face, breathing troubles, and severe dizziness. Some widespread side effects of using Cleocin include vomiting, nausea, and diarrhea. Cleocin may also be the cause of several very serious side effects, such as joint pain, dark urine, heartburn, yellowing eyes or skin, and changes in the amount of urine.
